Sept. 30th
I had a pretty good sleep considering my head
was stopped up. I woke up at 5:30, but got up at 6:00, as it was still
dark. It was also cold, but I
slept warm in long underwear. I had breakfast, packed and was on the
trail before 7 AM.
The trail was rough with rocks, had a few long steep climbs and I moved
slowly. It took me about 3.5 hours to reach Port Clinton just over six
miles away.
I had been seeing signs on the AT the last few days encouraging hikers to
wear bright orange clothing as the archery hunting season begins tomorrow.
I decided
to hitch into Hamburg to Cabela's to get an orange pack cover. It took about
15 minutes to get a ride, but I got the cover then had lunch at Burger King
next door. My hitch back to Port Clinton took a while too, but finally someone
stopped.
The 8.6 miles this afternoon was no picnic either. Many rocks again, but
not quite as bed. I arrived at the Eagles Nest Shelter before 6 PM for 14.7
miles
for the day. Again, I'm the only one here. Oh, well.
